Places to Visit
The Castle of Sifnos
The old capital of Sifnos is a true castle, a characteristic example of Venetian architecture, with its atmospheric alleyways winding through the walls. The view of the sea from the back side of the village is stunning, with or without a sunset.
The capital Apollonia
The night begins and ends in a narrow street in the island’s Chora. And by narrow street, it is meant a road that passes by taverns, traditional pastry shops, bars, and small shops, ending at the edge of Apollonia.
Kamares
Although Kamares is the beach opposite the port, it is very clean and its sand is large enough to accommodate everyone. Lying on the sand and watching the activity in the small harbor across is wonderful. And if you want something more in entertainment, you’ll hear music and see many people having fun at the two beach bars on the beach.
Artemonas
Don’t leave Sifnos without taking a stroll in the most beautiful area of the island, with its imposing mansions and sophisticated atmosphere, Artemonas. Stop and see these neoclassical buildings that look like palaces, smell the bougainvilleas, and go for a sweet treat at the most wonderful pastry shop in the village. Don’t leave Artemonas without buying the local anise-flavored biscuits!
Exambela: Take a walk in Tselementes’ village
Before it became a book, Nikolaos Tselementes was a remarkable cook who was born and lived in Exambela, Sifnos. Just one kilometer outside Apollonia, Exambela village is not only perfect for afternoon walks in its alleys but also to admire the Byzantine Art Museum housed in the Monastery of Panagia Vrysi and the ancient tower from the 6th century BC.
Herronissos
Don’t leave Sifnos without seeing Herronissos up close. It is located at the northernmost part of the island and has a wild beauty that will captivate you. It is a bay divided in the middle by the mountain. To your right, you will find a picturesque fishing village with a golden beach, perfect for endless dives. On the other side, the open sea invites you to take photos from afar! At the top of the hill, there is a small church for those who want photos with a high-altitude view.
Beaches to Visit
Beaches
The coastline of Sifnos forms beaches for all tastes. In several points of the island, there are isolated sandy shores, rocky coasts, pebble beaches, and organized beaches, two of which are awarded the Blue Flag. Most beaches are accessible by road, while some can be reached via picturesque paths or by sea.
Kamares
Kamares is the most famous and particularly beloved beach, which has been awarded the Blue Flag in recent years. At Kamares, you will find a large sandy beach, which is organized in several areas, as many restaurants and cafes in the area have tables and sunbeds on the sand. It is an ideal choice for families, as its crystal-clear waters are very shallow and calm. The tamarisk trees reach down to the sand, and the beach bars add a cheerful note to the already heightened summer mood.
Platis Gialos
Platis Gialos is one of the largest sandy beaches on the island and the most popular choice for visitors. Platis Gialos beach is awarded the Blue Flag every year by the European Union, meeting the program’s strict criteria. Crystal-clear waters lazily caress the sandy beach, making water games a must. Among the area’s attractions is the White Tower, located 1.5 kilometers northeast of the beach, one of the 77 ancient towers – beacons of the island and one of the best-preserved.
Vathi
Vathi is located in the west, 10 kilometers from the capital Apollonia. At the “Pounta of Polemiko,” the northern edge of the bay, archaeological excavations have uncovered prehistoric settlements and tombs. It is one of the most beautiful and largest sandy beaches on the island, with the protected “sand lilies” blooming near August 15th. The settlement is also popular for its many hidden taverns that serve fresh fish right by the water.
Faros
A sheltered harbor and fishing village 7 km from Apollonia, Faros was Sifnos’s port until 1883 and got its name from the ancient tower that once stood on the beach. Glyfo Beach, named after a well with brackish water that has existed there since ancient times, is on the right side of Faros beach. East of Faros beach is the secluded sandy beach “Fasolou,” with views of the Stavros Monastery and Chrysopigi. (Accessible by asphalt road leading to Faros or by a path starting from the Faros harbor)
Chrysopigi
The rocks of Chrysopigi are a favorite spot for many swimmers. East of the church is the sandy beach of “Apokofto” with its turquoise waters and unique buildings on the sand, including two restaurants. From there, a paved path leads to Glyfo beach in Faros. West of the church are the “Saoures,” a small secluded pebble beach.
Herronissos
Herronissos is the northernmost beach on the island, 15 kilometers from Apollonia. It is a picturesque fishing village with a small sandy beach. Here you will find taverns, a small grocery store, a few rental rooms, and a traditional pottery workshop.
Vroulidia
A small pebble beach 14 kilometers from Apollonia and about one kilometer before Herronissos. On the beach, there are two café-restaurants that offer umbrellas and sunbeds for bathers.
Fikiada
A small sandy beach between Platis Gialos and the bay of Vathi. Next to the beach is the chapel of Saint George, and behind it is one of the oldest olive groves on the island with traces of an old cart road. The beach is accessible by sea and by paths starting from Platis Gialos or Vathi.
